Ferngrove is a remarkable success story built on the vibrant dream of a prominent Western Australian south coast pioneering family. In 1996, with nearly 90 years of beef and dairy farming history behind his family, Ferngrove founder Murray Burton decided to move into premium grape growing. He mortgaged the family farm to purchase land at Frankland River, 360 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia, where he knew the productive soils, pristine environment and temperate Mediterranean climate were ideal for viticulture. His commitment to quality paid off immediately. The vines thrived and more land was acquired just a few kilometres away, leading to the establishment of Ferngrove Vineyard in 1998.
Ferngrove is now in the top echelon of Western Australian producers, both in size and quality and continues to grow both domestically and internationally, exporting to 12 countries. The primary focus of the skilled but refreshingly young and innovative winemaking team is to produce a range of complementary, high quality, balanced wine styles that are interesting, aromatic, fresh and fruit driven whilst offering exceptional value for money.
Since the release of the first vintage in 2001 Ferngrove’s wines have amassed an impressive tally of gold medals and trophies including the Best WA Dry Red at the 2006 Royal Perth Wine Show; Best Blended Red at the 2005 Royal Hobart Wine Show; Best Western Australian Dry Table Red at the 2004 Royal Perth Wine Show and Best Wine of The Show at the 2003 Royal Sydney Wine Show.
This success is sure to continue with Ferngrove’s Senior Winemaker Kim Horton awarded Young Winemaker of the Year in the Australian Wine Selectors 2005 shining lights awards for his exceptional winemaking ability. Kim says, “My greatest critics are our customers, and for me the biggest reward is when a wine I have made is enjoyed by them.”
The property features a cellar door which is open daily, fully equipped chalets which are nestled among the vines and the winery.
In 2006, prominent Australian wine critic James Halliday awarded Ferngrove’s winery 5 stars for the third consecutive year. The five star rating is defined as an “outstanding winery capable of producing wines of the highest calibre”
Reviews:
“This is arguably the most successful of the new breed of Western Australian wineries. It has the potential to be one of Australia's best…”
Oz Clarke - Decanter, December 2004
“Ferngrove is without doubt one of the most impressive start-up wineries of the past five years.”
Huon Hooke - Sydney Morning Herald, Good Living, October 2004
