Galafreys Winery and Cellar Door

Galafrey Wines has never planned to be the biggest vineyard. We’ve always just focussed on being the best.

Our quest began in 1977 when we established an estate vineyard in Mt Barker, 350kms south of Perth. We were one of the pioneer winemakers in the Great Southern region, an area now famous for it’s cool climate and premium quality wine production.

You may note that our old vines are not irrigated; something quite unusual in these days of mass commercial production. We prefer low-yielding wine crops with small berries. Although it limits our volume, having smaller fruit fosters an intensity of the flavour, with most of the colour and tannin of the grape being concentrated in or near the skin.

The characteristically cool climate of the district ensures slow ripening of the grapes, which also allows for the development of rich flavour and quality grape juice.

Galafrey Wines is committed to producing fruit of the highest quality, with a philosophy that quality fruit is the key to winemaking excellence.

Galafrey Wines remains a family-owned business and all wines are grown, nurtured and bottled on the estate.  Established by Ian Tyrer (1946-2003), Galafrey is survived by mother and daughter team, Linda and Kim Tyrer.

Linda and Kim maintain a hands-on role to ensure that the Galafrey philosophy is upheld.

Galafrey's impressive cellar door boasts breathtaking views of the vines and surrounding bushland. Come and meet Henry, the winery dog, who will greet you at the car park and escort you to the door. And, most importantly, enjoy the taste that is Galafrey Wines.

Today, Galafrey has twelve hectares under vine consisting of Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Merlot Grapes.  We are also growing Muller-Thurgau, a unique white grape variety that produces a light, flavourful, fruity grape that’s low in acid.

RESERVE CHARDONNAY
Has just a hint of toastiness associated with barrel-aged wines. Soft, honeyed, peachy fruit aromas, citrus peel, fig and delicate sweet oak finish. Ideal with pork, chicken, baked whole snapper or barbecued quail.

CHARDONNAY
A lovely melon and creamy peach driven wine, pleasant fresh fruit and persistence flavours, great length. Prefect with grilled crayfish, Japanese food or creamy risotto.

RIESLING
Intense lemon and lime, full palate of flavours with zesty, long crisp acid finish. Imagine this with smoked salmon or freshly caught whiting.

SEMILLON SAUVIGNON BLANC  Terrific intensity, refreshing acidity, touches of guavas, gooseberries and passion fruit with loads of length. Prefect with chicken or seafood linguine.

SAUVIGNON BLANC
A grassy herbal aroma and tropical fruit palate. Smooth balanced and youthful with long lasting flavours. Ideal with prawns and lemongrass.

MULLER
Made from Muller Thurgau. Passionfruit, tropical fruits on the nose and on the palate with just a touch of
sweetness.

FRANKLAND RIVER SHIRAZ
Loads of sweet black cherry, spice and pepper flavours. A stylish palate with silky tannins and a drink now finish. Serve with slow cooked veal and black olives.

CABERNET MERLOT
A delicious mix of mulberries, blackberries, cedary, tannins and an elegant weight. Perfect with rosemary and garlic infused roast lamb or mushroom risotto.

PINOT NOIR
Powerful aromatic earth/cherry plum aromas with nice fruit complexity, good intergrated wood and long finish.

MERLOT
Excellent berry plum, chocolate bouquet, long juicy sweet varietal fruit palate over a beautiful oak backbone. Unbeatable with a slow-cooked Italian meat dish.

SHIRAZ
Black pepper, vanillin oak extends the palate with ripe plums and mulberries flavours. Soft fine tannins, refreshing acid gives a refined elegance and lingering finish. Imagine this with a big fat juicy steak or slow cooked lamb shanks

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Delicious mouthful of fine elegant tannins– powerful blackcurrant aromas, cigar box with a hint of chocolate. It’s well balanced, complex with a long finish. Great with rack of lamb, osso buco or simply seared eye fillet of beef.
