Goundrey Wines was established in Mount Barker in the early 1970's when the region was first recognised for its viticultural potential. The infectious enthusiasm of Jack Mann encouraged a small number of farmers to diversify to grape growing, and pioneer in this region.
Amongst the original vineyards were 2 hectares of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, planted by the Goundrey Family in 1971 at the original Windy Hill property. Following the success of this development, further vines were planted at the Windy Hill property, and in 1976 Michael Goundrey produced the first vintage.
In 1979, the purchase and restoration of the old Sunnywest Butter Factory in nearby Denmark provided the first real winery and cellar sales 'home'.
The Goundrey label underwent significant growth during the 1980's, and soon outgrew these premises. In 1986 a major step was taken when the magnificent and historic property Langton at Mount Barker was purchased.
The Langton property has a colourful and significant history; founded in 1839 by Sir Richard Spencer, it has since been home to a succession of prominent farming families with a diverse range of agricultural interests including sheep farm, a cattle farm, the most prominent apple-growing farm in the district, and is now the most prominent vineyard in the area.
In 1988 70 hectares of vineyard were planted on the valley slopes, and a large and modern winery was built. The original winery was a striking feature built of rammed earth and sheoak shingle roof.
The purchase of Goundrey in late 1995 by Perth businessman Jack Bendat. Plans were immediately undertaken for a substantial increase in vineyard planting, with some 50 hectares established in 1996 and a further 50 hectares was planted in 1997 until a total of 175 hectares was planted.
Major extensions to the winery commenced and a large investment has also been made to set Goundrey Wines among the largest wine producers in Western Australia. In January 2002 a further 208ha of prime land 9 kms north of Mount Barker was purchased. With this purchase came the inclusion of some of the region’s oldest and most consistently high quality vineyards. This property has been further expanded with major plantings of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Goundrey joined Constellation Wines Australia portfolio in June 2006, and is now represented as part of the most comprehensive Western Australian wine portfolio in Australia.
