The Montgomery name is well known through the goldfields and in the south-west of Western Australia.
Charles James Montgomery came from Ireland in 1889 at the age of 18 to join his brothers in South Australia. He left in 1892 to seek opportunities in the west, where he commenced a retailing business that stretched from Southern Cross through Kalgoorlie to the northern goldfields.
When CJ retired to Albany in the early 1920’s, he purchased the property, which became the farm where the wines come from.
CJ’s son, Maxwell, continued the farm after his father’s death, and Maxwell’s sons, Murray and Iain, also continue the farm and in the process planted a vineyard.
Montgomery’s Hill is a property 15km east of Albany on the South Coast Highway. Its first crop was potatoes and the current vineyard site was also an apple orchard where the apples found their way to the Kalgoorlie markets. It then became a grazing paddock for livestock until being planted as a vineyard in 1995-1996.
