In 1968, the young and vibrant Tony Smith, planted an experimental vineyard on his Bouverie property in the Great Southern of Western Australia.
After many trials and tribulations, including some untimely pruning by a flock of stray sheep, the first grapes were picked in 1974. The resultant wines were the first Plantagenet Shiraz and Cabernet. The fruit was picked at 11º Baume. The Shiraz was tight and lean and showed the distinctive spiciness of the region, the Cabernet was robust. This inspired Tony with the confidence and enthusiasm to establish the first winery in the Great Southern region. In 1975 an apple packing shed, in the township of Mount Barker was purchased and converted into a winery. The first vintage from the winery was produced, under the guidance of winemaker David McNamara.
As the winery grew, vineyard plantings expanded with the establishment of the aptly named Rocky Horror vineyard in 1988. Located fifteen kilometres south of Mount Barker the land was originally dotted with large subsurface boulders the size of a small car. The boulders were crushed and added back to the soil over a period of two years creating the perfect environment for vines to struggle out of the ground.
In 1994 Lionel Samson and Son, Western Australia's oldest family company, purchased a share in the winery commencing a successful relationship between the Great Southern premier winery and the Fremantle company.
Expansion continued throughout the nineties in both the winery and the vineyards. Rosetta vineyard was established in 1999 taking the total vineyard plantings to 120 hectares.
Plantagenet Wines now produces three labels. We have our premium Great Southern Plantagenet Range, Omrah and Hazard Hill.
Plantagenet Wines has established an enviable reputation for producing premium wines over its 30 year history, winning over 350 trophies and medals.
