The story behind the Great Shiraz

Five Virtues is the result of the vision of a group of Great Southern wine producers and associated industry backers, united on a unique project to promote both wine and region. One huge vessel has been created to house 290 litres of super-premium Great Southern Shiraz, christened Five Virtues and bearing a striking black label adorned with the distinctive five stars of the Southern Cross. A limited production run of just 2000 six-pack cases of collector’s item 750ml bottles has also been released.

Five Virtues recognizes and celebrates the Great Southern’s greatest strengths - its size, diversity and the people who belong to it.

The process behind creating the Shiraz

Five of the Great Southern’s most respected winemakers, each representing a different sub-region, were charged with the mammouth task of selecting and blending parcels of Shiraz from across the five sub-regions to compromise Five Virtues. In January 2006, a comprehensive tasting of more than 30 of the best 2005 vintage samples was undertaken and over eight hours later the genesis of the final blend emerged.

The wine consists of 15 different components in equal, 6.66 per cent proportions of the blend, sourced from 11 producers representing every sub-region. The parcels selected were produced by Castle Rock Estate, Ferngrove Vineyards, Forest Hill, Goundrey Wines, Hamlet Vineyard, Howard Park, Mount Trio Vineyard, Plantagenet, West Cape Howe, Wignalls Wines and Xabregas.

Five Virtues Shiraz produced in the Great Southern Wine Region of Western Australia

Concept founder Kim Bullock, owner of 'North Road Liquor' in Albany, has a passion for the Great Southern Region and their wines. Kim created the big bottle to provide focus on the region and to showcase the stunning, premium quality varietal wines.

Almost two metres high and 520mm in diameter, the 290 litre Five Virtues will fill 1935 glasses. It equates to 387 standard wine bottles, or 32,25 cases, is made of 100% continously formed glass and sealed with Portuguese cork.

David Jones of 'Great Southern Packaging' based in Albany facilitated the making of the Big Bottle. The bottle was crafted in West Germany in a joint effort by LENZ Laborglas GMBH & Co KG of Wertheim, which handled the design and logistics, and QVF of Mainz, which handled the production.

David was also instrumental in the procuring of the very large cork from Portugal.
